Twenty-Three Singapore Specialist Mediators Empanelled as SIMC Marks 10 Years During Singapore Convention Week This August 2024

The Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) recently conducted its annual Singapore Specialist Mediators’ Workshop on August 5th and 6th, 2024. This exclusive, by-invitation event welcomed twenty-three accomplished legal professionals, representing a wide array of prestigious local and international law firms and corporations. The aim of the workshop was to train participants in becoming certified Singapore Specialist Mediators, equipping them with advanced skills in structured mediation and interest-based dispute resolution.

The workshop was led by Professor Joel Lee, Chairman of the Singapore International Mediation Institute (SIMI); and supported by Mr. George Lim SC, Chairman of SIMC; and Mr. Chuan Wee Meng, SIMC's CEO. Over two intensive days, participants were immersed in hands-on mediation exercises and role-playing sessions that challenged them to apply theoretical concepts to practical situations.

Guidance came not only from the lead trainers but also from external coaches and experienced SIMC mediators. Distinguished mediators such as Mr. Jonathan Choo, Ms. Eunice Chua, Mr. See Chern Yang, Mr. Aaron Lee, Mr. William Ong, and Ms. Ng Chai Ngee—alongside SIMC's Mr. Antony Lee and Mr. Siddharth Jha—provided personalized feedback, enriching the participants' learning experiences. The diverse legal backgrounds of the coaches added depth to the discussions, allowing participants to sharpen their mediation techniques and develop a more nuanced understanding of dispute resolution.

The event culminated in an empanelment ceremony, where participants were officially empanelled as Singapore Specialist Mediators. Mr. George Lim SC awarded certificates and gifts to the newly certified mediators, recognizing their commitment and successful completion of the workshop. The ceremony took a personal turn with a surprise birthday celebration for Chenthil, Sapna, Kartikey, and Wee Meng, who all share August birthdays. The celebration, complete with cake and wine, added a joyous and memorable touch to an already impactful event. Several past Specialist Mediators also joined the gathering, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere for the newest members of this esteemed group.

This workshop and empanelment come at a particularly significant time for SIMC, as August also marks the 10th Anniversary of SIMC, which will be celebrated during Singapore Convention Week (SC Week). Themed "Mediation: The Next Frontier," SIMC’s anniversary event will take place as part of the SC Week festivities, with the newly empanelled Singapore Specialist Mediators invited to attend. They will have the unique opportunity to participate in a photo session with the Guest-of-Honour, Minister K Shanmugam SC, Singapore’s Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law. Be sure to watch this space for further updates, including insights from SIMC's 10th Anniversary celebrations!
