The Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) successfully completed its Specialist Mediators’ Workshop (SMW) in Guangzhou on 20–21 December 2025, conducted in partnership with the Guangzhou Arbitration Commission and supported by the Guangdong Lawyers Association and the Greater China Association of Corporate Counsel. The workshop brought together 20 legal professionals from eight cities across China, reflecting the growing interest in mediation as a practical and effective tool within the city’s evolving dispute resolution landscape. The workshop opened with welcome remarks by SIMC CEO Chuan Wee Meng and Wang Tian Xi, Chairman of the Guangzhou Arbitration Commission.

Advancing Mediation Practice in Guangzhou
The two-day programme was led by Wee Meng and Lawrence Tan, Founding Partner of Eldan Law LLP and an SIMC International Mediator, with support from Serena Liu, Deputy Director (Operation and China) of SIMC. Through interactive, practice-focused sessions, participants engaged in discussions on advanced mediation skills, structured negotiation techniques, and the management of complex commercial and cross-border disputes.
Participants represented a broad cross-section of the legal and business community. The cohort included two General Counsels from SIG Group and Hive Box Network, a Legal Manager from CIMC Enric Holding Group, 15 partners from various law firms, several of whom are former judges, as well as representatives from the Guangzhou Arbitration Commission, and a leading local university. The diversity of professional backgrounds contributed to thoughtful exchanges and practical insights on the role of mediation across different industries and dispute contexts.
Throughout the workshop, participants actively engaged the trainers and one another, and were forthcoming in sharing perspectives drawn from their own practice. Discussions were enriched by real-world experience, reinforcing mediation’s value as a constructive process that supports early issue resolution while preserving relationships.
The workshop concluded on the second day with the presentation of certificates of completion by Hu Huai Liang, Deputy Chairman of the Guangzhou Arbitration Commission, together with Wee Meng, marking the close of the workshop.
A heartfelt thanks to our partner, supporting organisations and all participants. The workshop would not be a success without their total commitment and support.
Participants are separated into smaller groups to role-play what they have learnt.
An engaging session made even more meaningful by participants who asked thoughtful questions and actively shared perspectives.
Engagements with Partners and Stakeholders in Greater Bay Area
In conjunction with its trip to Guangzhou, SIMC also visited several local institutions, Chinese enterprises, and law firms in the Greater Bay Area. These engagements enabled SIMC to reconnect with partners and users, deepen long-standing relationships, explore potential collaborations, and further strengthen the foundation for building a sustainable mediation ecosystem in China.
This Greater Bay Area engagement concludes SIMC’s final China visit for 2025, following a series of initiatives such as the Specialist Mediators’ Workshop in Beijing in May, the SIAC China Conference, as well as the 39th session of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME) Expert Committee’s public lecture series. Together, these efforts underscore SIMC’s continued commitment to deepening partnerships and advancing mediation capacity across the region, as SIMC looks ahead to the next chapter of engagement in China.
