Seminar Celebrating the 5th Anniversary of the JIMC-Kyoto

On November 20, 2023, the 5th anniversary of JIMC-Kyoto was celebrated. To mark this special occasion, a seminar titled "The Evolution of Mediation - 5 years JIMC-Kyoto - taking stock and looking into the future" was held.

This half-day event, which was co-hosted by SIMC, Doshisha University Research Center for International Transaction and Law (RECITAL), and the Japan Association of Arbitrators (JAA), included a keynote speech from Hiroyuki Tezuka, Vice-President of JAA and Chief Director of JIMC-Kyoto, and a special video message from Antonio Piazza, one of the leading mediators in the world.

Mr. Lok Vi Ming, SC, Deputy Chairman of SIMC, presented various mediation collaborations across borders and the international outreach undertaken by SIMC. Other distinguished speakers included practitioners from Japan, Singapore, the USA, Canada, and Germany:

  • Court-administered mediation in German court proceedings - by Michael Molitoris, lawyer, SZA Schilling, Zutt & Anschutz, Germany
  • Lessons from Common Law mediation and "Hawaii-style" mediation - by Haig Oghigian, Fasken, Canada
  • Innovative approaches in high-stakes US mediations - by Daniel Pulecio-Boek, lawyer, Greenberg Traurig, USA
  • How to utilize new and old wisdom - Future for AI and retired judges as International mediation resources - by Yoshihiro Takatori, lawyer, Kasumigaseki International Law Office, International Arbitration Chambers

The discussion was moderated by Lar Markert, lawyer from Nishimura & Asahi, and Yuri Kawashima, lawyer from Oh-Ebashi LPC & Partners.
