Leading Legal Minds Gather in Shanghai for SIMC Specialist Mediators' Workshop
May 27, 2024
The Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) hosted its first China Specialist Mediators' Workshop (SMW) for 2024 in Shanghai, from May 18-19, 2024. The workshop was jointly organized with the Shanghai International Arbitration Center (SHIAC) and was conducted at the elegantly furnished office of SHIAC, which overlooks the beautiful new Pudong area.
The training featured top industry experts and focused on the theory and practice of various dispute resolution methods, especially international commercial mediation. The course was comprehensive, including role-playing, case studies, practical analysis, and skills sharing. After a preliminary selection process, 24 senior legal professionals from renowned law firms and corporate legal departments participated in the workshop.
The opening ceremony of the Specialist Mediators' Workshop featured speeches by Mr. Chuan Wee Meng, CEO of SIMC, and Ms. Wang Weijun, Secretary General of SHIAC.
In her speech, Secretary General Wang emphasized that dispute resolution services are central to Sino-Singapore legal cooperation. The cooperation agreement signed between SHIAC and SIMC last year led to the opportunity for this training. With the entry into force of the Singapore Convention on Mediation, international commercial mediation has become a new field of legal cooperation between Shanghai and Singapore. This training is a key initiative in jointly promoting the development of commercial mediation between the two regions and fostering a new generation of dispute resolution experts.
Mr.Chuan Wee Meng highlighted that commercial mediation, as a flexible method of dispute resolution, not only efficiently resolves disputes but also maintains and promotes cooperation between parties. SIMC's observations show that commercial mediation effectively addresses both minor and complex commercial disputes. He expressed hope that the participants would master the procedures and techniques of commercial mediation through this training.
The workshop was personally conducted by Mr. Chuan and Ms. Eunice Chua, CEO of the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre. Over the two-day course, participants received comprehensive training, learning cross-border commercial mediation skills through a pragmatic approach.
In addition to the rich theoretical content on mediation, the course prepared cases of varying degrees of complexity for participants to practice mediation techniques in role-playing sessions. Participants benefited not only from the guidance of the two trainers but also from the involvement of SIMC mediator Mr. See Chern Yang, Director of the Dispute Resolution Department at Drew & Napier LLC.
On May 19, participants successfully completed the training and were awarded a two-year appointment certificate as SIMC China Specialist Mediators. SIMC extends heartfelt congratulations to the latest batch of Specialist Mediators in China! We eagerly anticipate future mediation collaborations with them.
