The Coming into Force of the Singapore Convention on Mediation on 12 September 2020

With the deposit with the Secretary-General on 12 March 2020 of the third instrument of ratification, the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation, also known as the “Singapore Convention on Mediation”, shall enter into force on 12 September 2020.

The coming into force of the treaty follows Qatar’s deposit of its instrument of ratification, the third country after Fiji and Singapore to do so. The impact cannot be understated. At SIMC, we join others in the mediation community who believe that the Convention will give a fillip to the use of mediation as a key means to resolve cross-border commercial disputes – quickly, cost-effectively and amicably, for a more stable and peaceful world.
